How rabbit years work (honestly)

First, the honest part: there is no scientific or veterinary formula for converting rabbit years to human years. What exists is a popular convention, shaped around real rabbit life stages documented by welfare organizations like the House Rabbit Society and the RWAF. We show it because it is fun, and we label it as the estimate it is.

The convention is heavily front-loaded, because rabbits mature astonishingly fast. A 4-month-old rabbit hits puberty, which the convention counts as about 12 human years. By their first birthday they are a young adult at about 20. After that, each rabbit year adds roughly 6 human years, with rabbits becoming seniors somewhere between 5 and 8.

House rabbits typically live 8 to 12 years, so a long-lived rabbit reaches the equivalent of a healthy human retirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is the rabbit conversion scientific?

No, and we say so on screen. There is no scientific or veterinary formula for rabbit-to-human age. We show a popular estimate for fun, shaped around real rabbit life stages, but it should not be treated as fact.

How does the rabbit calculation work?

Rabbits mature extremely fast: the convention puts a 4-month-old rabbit around 12 human years and a one-year-old around 20. After that, each rabbit year adds roughly 6 human years.

When does a rabbit become a senior?

Welfare organizations put it between 5 and 8 years depending on the rabbit. Larger breeds age faster: giant breeds can be seniors as early as 4, while small breeds may not be seniors until 8.

How long do rabbits live?

House rabbits typically live 8 to 12 years, and some reach 14. That upper end maps to the mid-80s in human years on the popular conversion.

Does breed matter for rabbits?

The popular conversion treats all rabbits the same, and that is what we show. In reality breed matters: giant breeds like the Flemish Giant age roughly twice as fast as dwarf breeds, which is one more reason to treat the number as an estimate.
